Mario & Luigi: Brothership is the first brand new Mario & Luigi game in nearly 9 years, and it comes out in a little over two months, on November 7th. Ahead of that long-awaited release, Nintendo has shared some additional details about the game.
But before that, here’s a brand new (but rather short) trailer, called “Greetings from Concordia!”:
Next up, here’s some footage for the game, showcasing battles:
NB: some of the names mentioned in this post were transcribed from Japanese, and their official English equivalent is still TBA!
Mario & Luigi: Brothership takes place in a brand new world: Concordia. There, the Shipshape Island is your base operation, allowing Mario and Luigi to sail the vast, sprawling oceans of Concordia and explore the many islands that can be found there. As for the Shipshape Island, it’s part island, part ship, and it features a large tree known as the Connectal Tree.
Here’s the key characters of this new adventure:
- Mario: the superstar of the Mushroom Kingdom, and one of the two protagonists of the game. As he and his brother Luigi are spending some quality time in the gardens of Peach’s Castle, a mysterious vortex suddenly appears in the sky and sucks them in, transporting them to a mysterious place. Afterwards, they meet Connie and Snoutlet, who reveal that the world the duo was transported to is called Concordia;
- Luigi: one of the two protagonists. He’s quite the scaredy-cat and can be goofy at times, but in Concordia, players will get to see a different side of him as he solves various problems with sudden flashes of inspiration;
- Connie: a kind-hearted girl who tells Mario and Luigi all about Concordia. Following a certain incident, she went on to live on Shipshape Island. She religiously tends to the Connectal Tree;
- Snoutlet: a unique character who looks like a Piggy Bank. Just like Connie, he first meets Mario and Luigi on Shipshape Island. He serves as guide, assisting Mario and Luigi in their adventures through Concordia.
The vast oceans of Concordia are dotted with many islands, and it’s on those that most of the adventure takes place. Here’s a few of them:
- Grangran Island: an island covered in lumpy, hard objects, including the sacred Guraguradish. The inhabitants love to carve things, and you can find their creations on display all over the island;
- Twiss Island: an island known for its rich natural environments (including the large, strangely-shaped Twiss Tree that grows there), and a popular tourism spot.
- Savileta Island: an island littered with old, derelict buildings. Recently, birds frequently come to the island and kidnap its inhabitants, bringing them to some unknown place.
- Zenileva Island: an urban island, and the main driving force behind the economic development of Concordia. Unsurprisingly, its inhabitants are obsessed with doing business, and the island is known for its hectic atmosphere.
- Kandan Island: a unique island divided in two. One half is home to fiery rivers of magma while the other is covered in ice. The island is home to two, wildly different species who constantly fight over one thing or another.
Naturally, the islands of Concordia are filled with monsters that you have to battle. In order to win, you will need to master Mario & Luigi’s powerful Combination Attacks. Those turn Mario and Luigi’s regular Hammer and Jump attacks into deadly combos if you press the right buttons at the right time.
You need to be careful though, because if your timing is wrong, the resulting attacks won’t be quite as powerful, so you really need to nail it down to deal the most damage. Also, if either Mario or Luigi falls in battle, you won’t be able to use Combination Attacks and the remaining character will be forced to battle alone, so make sure to always have healing items at hand!
Next up: Bros. Attacks. Those moves are so powerful, they can turn a battle around in just one hit. The downside: they require BP (Brother Points) to be used! One such attack is the series’ trademark Red Shell, which can deal massive amounts of damage to a single enemy (highly recommended against bosses!).
If you need to deal damage to multiple enemies at once, Thunder Dynamo is the Bros. Attack you want. With this attack, Mario and Luigi take turn generating electricity, filling a massive cloud with it before unleashing it as thunder.
The key to victory is to know which Bros. Attack to use depending on the situation.
Finally, Nintendo shared some details about the villains: the Boldrude Squad (a trio of nefarious individuals) and a mysterious figure giving orders from behind the scenes. Very little is known about them at the moment, but it’s pretty clear Mario and Luigi will have to butt heads with them more than once!
