Why From's Season 3 Finale Kills Off THAT Major Original Character (5)

WARNING! This article contains major SPOILERS for From season 3, episode 10!MGM+’s From season 3 finale concludes with the shocking death of Jim Matthews (Eion Bailey), which marks the biggest death yet among the main characters. While Boyd Stevens can arguably be considered the main character of From, the story has largely been centered around the Matthews family, as their unfortunate arrival in town kicked off the series’ events. With Jim, Tabitha, Julie, and Ethan Matthews being so crucial to the story, it seemed unlikely that any of them would be killed off that soon, especially considering most previous From deaths had been supporting characters.

Jim’s death thus came as a major surprise in From’s season 3 finale. He wasn’t the first significant character killed this season, with Tian-Chen, Tillie, and Dale’s deaths preceding him during season 3, but his will have the greatest story impact. Jim leaves behind his wife and their two children, with his death coming almost immediately after the discovery that Tabitha and Jade are actually Miranda and Christopher, and one of the “Anghkooey” kids is their daughter. Jim being murdered sets up major changes for From season 4, and is certain to carry weight throughout the remainder of the series.

In the final moments of From season 3, Jim walks to the old RV that the Matthews family drove into town when they became trapped. While there, Jim hears a panicked Julie calling out to him, eventually seeing her with scratches on her face and a shorter haircut. All of a sudden, a mysterious man in a yellow suit walks up to Jim and tells him that “knowledge comes with a cost,” explaining that he had previously “warned” him against prying into this town’s secrets.

The monstrous man then reminds Jim of his past warning, “Your wife shouldn’t have dug that hole,” before fatally slashing Jim’s throat. A horrified Julie looks on and screams as her father dies, though her previous line that this is “when it happens,” suggests she already knew Jim’s death was coming. After From season 3 confirmed time travel when Julie returned to the dungeons, the Julie seen in Jim’s death scene is implied to be from the future. It seems that future Julie tried to return to the moment of Jim’s death to prevent it, but couldn’t “change the story.”

He seemingly has greater powers than other monsters, perhaps being their leader.

It’s still unclear who exactly From’s monster in the yellow suit is. His line before killing Jim reveals that he was the one communicating on the radio in From’s season 1 finale, telling Jim that Tabitha shouldn’t dig the hole in their house. Given he can walk outside in daylight, confronts Jim about knowing too much about the town’s secrets, and calls the residents to warn them, he seemingly has greater powers than other monsters, perhaps being their leader. According to that monster, Jim knew too much after Tabitha and Jade regained their past-life memories, so he had to die.

Story-wise, it makes sense for From’s season 3 finale to kill off Jim. Tabitha and Jim had already been growing apart, and that would only get worse following the revelation about her real purpose and history in From’s town. Now that Tabitha and Jade know that they’re reincarnated versions of Miranda and Christopher, From season 4 is going to need to pair them together even more than they already were throughout season 3.

From season 3, episode 9 concludes with Tabitha Matthews having an intense vision of how Victor's mother, Miranda, really died 40+ years prior.

If Jim had still been around, then he would have served as an obstacle for Tabitha to dedicate her time and emotions to further exploring her past in From season 4. Tabitha and Jade are going to be grappling with the fact that one of From’s “Anghkooey” kids is technically their daughter, and it’s something that Jim wouldn’t be able to understand and would likely cause her to push him away. As tragic as it is to see him go, Jim’s absence allows From season 4 to have more freedom in giving Jade and Tabitha a more closely intertwined story.

Jim's Death Raises The Stakes For From Season 4 & Beyond

No Character Is Safe In From's Future

Not to mention, Jim Matthews’ death raises the stakes substantially ahead of From season 4. There had been talk about how From might be playing it safe by avoiding deaths within the main cast, and how those characters might have too much plot armor to die. However, Jim’s death proves otherwise. Now that Jim has been killed by the monsters, From is proving that nobody is safe. Not Boyd, not Tabitha, not Julie, and not Victor. Everyone is fair game in this deadly town, and the stakes have never been higher now that the origins of From's monsters have been revealed.

From season 4 was officially renewed by MGM+ on November 21, 2024.

In addition to raising the stakes, killing off Jim provides a strong, emotional motivation for the Matthews family to learn the full truth about this town and urgently find an escape. Julie being a “story walker” who can travel through time suggests that she’ll continue to look for a way to undo Jim’s death, giving her a more tragic motivation for learning to manipulate the town’s “story” and nonlinear passage of time. Ethan will be more motivated to figure out his role in this story, and Tabitha will have another reason to seek revenge against From’s monsters.
